Propane Cylinder Recycling

The Michigan Propane Gas Association (MPGA) is an advocate of tank recycling. We are doing our part in the proper disposal and recycling of out-of-date propane cylinders. The MPGA has just completed a successful campaign to reclaim and recycle out-of-date and discarded 20lbs. (traditional gas grill tanks) and the larger 100lbs. cylinder.

Beginning April 1, 2002, all cylinders 4lbs. to 40lbs. (typical gas grill cylinders) that do not have an overflow protection device (OPD) cannot be filled by a marketer. The OPD cylinders that are new to the customer, provide more safeguards when being filled by your local marketer. It is recognized by the triangle-shaped valve handle. If you have the older cylinder (round-valve handle), it can be recycled by contacting your local propane marketer. If you do not have one, contact an MPGA member in your area.

At this time there are no statewide recycling programs for the smaller cylinders usually associated with tailgating and camping. Though the MPGA suggests recycling whenever possible, the smaller tanks are safe for disposal with regular garbage collection. The MPGA suggests contacting a local propane marketer in your area to see if they recycle or have alternative suggestions
